BITEG - Biomaterials & Tissue Engineering Group

The Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Group (formerly the Yorkshire Tissue Engineering Group) is an interdisciplinary regional organisation in the United Kingdom involving universities in Yorkshire, particularly the Universities of York, Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford. It provides a collaborative focus for laboratory and clinical research into tissue engineering.

The Group defines tissue engineering as "the use of biological and engineering principles to construct functional tissues to supplement or replace diseased or defective body parts". This involves the isolation of cells from the patient's body that are cultured in the laboratory and reimplanted in the patient, often incorporated in synthetic or biological materials that give structure to the replacement tissue. Tissue engineering is a fast-evolving field of medical science that is already providing treatment for patients.

The aim of the Group is to promote interdisciplinary interactions and applications for external funding by:

  • co-ordinating funding bids

  • organising 'work in progress' workshops

  • maintaining an e-mail network that reaches over 100 researchers and clinicians in academia and industry across the Yorkshire region.
